I am currently working my way through the application process for the Peace Corps. Here is my first attempt at the first essay. Any feedback will be appreciated.
I was blessed with an unquenchable thirst for adventure and instilled with a deep sense of moral obligation to become someone who can take an unabashed look in a mirror. The Peace Corp sounds like a vehicle to propel me toward a sense of self-satisfaction, quench my adventurous craving and provide me with invaluable skills in my pursuit of a rewarding career.
I have learned a great deal from the things I have experienced in my time. Good things often come at great prices, knowledge is priceless, honesty and integrity are necessary in all successful relationships, and determination and persistence will breed greatness. It is these principles which have prepared me for a commitment such as, the Peace Corps. A two year period will be necessary, in order for me to fully integrate into the culture and make a significant contribution. I have no doubt the benefits of such a commitment will far out weigh the time dedicated and will open doors to unimaginable, otherwise unobtainable places.
I have spent enough time oversees to realize that the American image abroad needs improvement. I believe that we have been the “haves” for so long, the vast majority of us have forgotten what it is like to be without. It is hard for us to relate to those in difficult circumstances. There is a need for first hand knowledge of foreign cultures. The first step to helping is understanding. I want to immerse myself in a community, in need of assistance. I want to understand the people, the culture and the circumstances of their situation; so that I can offer assistance and inspire others to do the same. Everyone deserves the simple necessities; that I have been fortunate enough to often take for granted. If I can improve the quality of life, ease a burden, expand a mind, or inspire others to do so then I have made a difference.
I want to be able to look back on life with a sense of satisfaction. I want to fulfill my aspirations, understand those in need, provide any assistance I can, inform and educate others of the problems facing humanity, inspire them to help make a difference and improve the American image abroad. Any problem facing humanity, is my problem and I would like to work toward a solution. Gandhi, put in simple terms “You must be the change you want to see in the world.”
